Love in the Time of Cholera
Love in the Time of Cholera is a sweeping romantic epic by Nobel Prize–winning Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez, first published in Spanish in 1985 as El amor en los tiempos del cólera. Translated into English by Edith Grossman in 1988, it tells the story of Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza, whose love spans fifty-one years, nine months, and four days.
In late 19th-century Cartagena, Florentino falls madly in love with Fermina. They exchange passionate letters, but her father separates her, crushing their youthfullove. Years later, Fermina chooses a stable life with the respected Dr. Juvenal Urbino. While Fermina builds a decades-long marriage, Florentino—though he has 622 romantic affairs—keeps his heart reserved for her, waiting silently.
When Dr. Urbino dies, Florentino finally seizes his chance. In a final act of devotion, he boards a riverboat with Fermina, hoists the cholera flag to escape social judgment, and renews his love. Set against a backdrop of cholera outbreaks and war, the novel explores love in all its forms—passionate, patient, enduring, and unexpected.
A landmark of magical realism, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest love stories ever written.
